Critical Incident Stress Management

Critical Incident Stress Management is a multifaceted program designed to assist in the recovery of individuals, work groups, and communities after a traumatic event has occurred. In working environments, a CISM service should be made available to the staff as soon as possible after they have either witnessed, or been victims of a traumatic event.

What Types of Incidents Could Occur?
Industry Specific
- Electrocution
- Heavy Equipment Accident
- Fall
- Vehicle Crash
- Equipment Malfunction
- Fire or Explosion
Non-Industry Specific
- Sudden death on site or off site (natural causes)
- Natural Disaster
- Violence
- Family Tragedies
- Lay Offs

How Are Individuals & Work Places Affected?
- Normal Physical, Emotional, Behavioral symptoms
- Immediate and Delayed Responses
- These events intrude upon both our personal & work lives

What Are Peer Teams?
- They are a group of volunteer "helpers" representing client's profession, who have been specifically trained as first responders/defusers to any critical incident in their vocational field.

How Do Peer Teams Help?
- Provide Immediate Response
- Instill Confidence as "they are in the business": they understand
- They can talk the language
- Provide an on site forum for ventilation and stress reduction for the staff
- Provide education
- Assess & prepare staff for debriefing to follow
- NOT THERAPISTS
